It’s been awhile since we last ate at Papá Gallo in Fayetteville, and now I’m sorry we waited so long. We just took Dave’s folks to lunch there and came away very happy that we did.
The service could not have been better – timed perfectly, friendly without being intrusive, just right. Dad had a Burrito Verde, Mom had a couple of fish tacos, Dave had a Burrito Diablo (hot!), and I had the full dinner plate of two fish tacos, pico de gallo, guacamole, beans and rice. And get this: I ate gluten-free! There are plenty of items on the menu labeled V (vegan), Gf (gluten-free or easily prepared that way) or both. I was in heaven.
Everyone declared they were very happy with their meal. My fish was excellent, with just the right amount of crunch but cooked to perfection. (If you can cook fish or eggs properly, you get a gold star in my book.) The pico de gallo and the guacamole were very fresh and tasty. Borracho (drunken) beans made with beer and bacon were a nice change from the usual re-fried pinto or black beans. Isn’t everything better with bacon?
Dave was in seventh heaven – or a happy hell – with his Diablo. He declared that, as promised on the menu, this was indeed hot. Not just gringo-hot but truly Mexican-hot. He ate the whole thing and then some of my beans and rice.
We were too full for dessert, so will have to come by some other time. It’s also about time we had mole, one of their dinner offerings. I’m sure our readers know that that’s not the meat of a small rodent but rather MOH-lay, from the verb moler – to grind. A mole has a lot of ground spices and seeds in it. And chocolate. What’s not to like? We’ll have to report on that one soon. Who wants to join us?
