We do our best to find new places to eat, but Syracuse isn’t the biggest town, and our dining budget is not astronomical, so we often return to several old favorites. Of course, I suppose that’s obvious to any regular reader of this blog. But we do have a new favorite place we keep returning to again and again – Sakana Ya.

It’s very different from other places in town, and that’s immediately apparent upon entering the restaurant, which is right in Armory Square. It’s very brightly lit, blazing white with bold color accents. It’s extremely modern, and really gives the feeling that you’re eating in a large city. I don’t always go for the trendy-martini-bar-ultra-modern look (I am a Syracusan after all, and we tend to be wary of hipness and modernity), but the style here really fits. It’s festive, and works really well with the unique sushi conveyor belt, which presents you continuously with various sushi choices which you simply grab as they go by. Techno music plays in the background, completing the stylish ambience.

The waitstaff is extremely friendly, and very helpful to those who may not be sushi mavens. Most importantly – the food is absolutely delicious, certainly as good or better than any sushi we’ve had in town. There are many types of dishes, and many (OK, nearly all) were unfamiliar to me by name. So to get around this, they have a very clever method of color-coded dishes – you simply see which plate the food is on, look at the plate-price-key picture, and you know the price of your dish.

Last time we ate there, it occurred to me that I was enjoying an incredible meal without knowing the name of a single dish we were eating. That said, from experience I did recognize various ingredients and techniques. I like adventure when eating, so this was great fun, like a treasure hunt. For more timid diners who want to try sushi, the waitstaff is very willing to tell you about each dish and its ingredients. Then again, if someone were simply a meat-and-potatoes drone, they’d probably never set foot in a sushi place in the first place.

The warm sake really enhanced the whole meal. It’s such a great, fun restaurant… check it out! They also have a location at the Fayetteville Towne Centre mall (Oh, isn’t that spelling just SO very precious?).

One friend tried some Japanese on the waitress, and got no response. This led him to opine that they may actually be Korean. To be honest, I don’t know, but I was not entirely convinced that he just may have had bad pronunciation. The only small quibble I’ve had with them is the very large TV that they always have on, albeit without sound.
