Last night we tried our umpteenth try at Tomato Pie in Syracuse. We didn't have high hopes until I ordered the pie and the wonderful man on the phone said (paraphrase) You're gonna love my tomato pie, and when he lovingly described how the sauce was made my hopes soared. Lo and behold, through the door comes the best Tomato Pie I have ever had. If you haven't had NY Gianni's Tomato Pie, you are in for a great experience and if you've never had a Tomato Pie, this is the one to start with. I come from a family of great cooks and I've had the Tomato Pie in the best places in The City (NY) and I swear to you, none has compared to NY Gianni's Bronx Style Pizza at 1428 Burnet Ave. 315 425-7770. No matter where you live, the Pie is worth the drive! Kathleen Morse, Ginny Russell

Our favorite place is Gentile's on Burnet Ave. Kevin has a knack for the eclectic palate. His sauces are always amazing and he gives a generous amount of veggies & starch with the entree. The most unique part is the dipping "sauce" with warm bread. He uses true extra virgin olive oil, a swirl of balsamic reduction and a pate-like swirl of white beans & gorgonzola. It's a cozy atmosphere with friendly & timely service.

Another hidden gem you might want to check out is The Kind Coffee Company on West Fayette Street(800 block). I can't start the day without a cup. It is not the fanciest place, but Doug Nicolaisen (and his dog, Koro) roast the coffee the same day. Monday's roast is light and it gets darker as the week progresses.
