OMG! Mike Sweetman is no longer at the River House. Very sad for the River House, but perhaps better for Syracuse. We can't wait to see who has the good sense to put up with Mike's big-city swagger that is backed up with rock-solid credentials. I mean, what do you do with a chef who grew up in New York City and worked several summers for Le Cirque's Sirio Maccioni? Good thing there are more than a few people in Syracuse who appreciate Italian food. Let's see if anyone has the courage to give this guy the room he needs to do something stupendous here.

Last night we went to the River House Restaurant again, but this time with friends who are originally from New York (the city). In brief: a) friend D. grew up within blocks of where Mike Sweetman had grown up and worked, on what they agreed was "restaurant row", b) the meal was every bit as good as the last one we had there, and c) D. said something like "this is the best shrimp I've ever had." Now that's coming from a New Yorker! I won't bore you with details like the depth of Mike's knowledge of sauces or the way he balances flavors to create an exciting whole experience. Nope, I'll just suggest you make your way up to Pulaski (we had to teach D. how to pronounce it the upstate way) before the snow gets too deep on I-81. Gives you about three months. Don't wait. (For you non-York-staters, it's not poo-lah-skee.)
