The Golden Crown

Dave and I had been for a long walk, from our house to Sunnycrest Park and then up to the top of Lincoln Park. Walking home along James St. on a Sunday evening, we didn’t have much hope of getting something to eat right now - which was the way we wanted it. Just about every eatery (read: take-out joint) on James Street is closed on a Sunday evening. But as we continued east on James, past Midler, we saw a golden light ahead of us, just past Nichols. The Golden Crown!

This is a chicken and ribs take-out joint (audible sigh) and we figured, hey, why not give it a try? It’s only about a block from our house. So we went in and waited our turn to order. It’s very brightly lit. There’s basically space to stand around while you wait to order, a couple teeny-tiny tables, and some pretty tantalizing foodstuffs to look at. All offerings of chicken and ribs come with potato wedges (a couple offer mashed potatoes, too) and you can get coleslaw with that. But all we wanted were chicken pieces. This is not on the menu, but the owner gladly obliged us. We walked those babies home and tore into them.

Wow! This was really tasty chicken. It’s got a crispy crust with just the right amount of spice in a savory blend whose components we couldn’t quite place. The meat was juicy – even the white meat was tender but not mushy. What else can you ask of a piece of chicken?

We are thrilled. Now we can walk to a quick source of protein that’s yummy to boot. Next time: the ribs.

Do we wish it was a full service restaurant? You bet. (Hey! Developers! Eastwood is starved for a sit-down restaurant that serves something besides pizza or sandwiches!) Are we happy to have these folks in the neighborhood? You bet. Give them a try and let us know how you find the other offerings as well.

The Golden Crown serves chicken and ribs with potato wedges and coleslaw. It also has a huge variety of hot subs, burgers and other sandwiches, including meatball, eggplant, haddock, Rueben, gyro, and a couple wraps. Rounding out the menu are appetizers, salads, milk shakes and sodas.

Open 10 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. <- that’s not a typo!

My wife and I have had an opportunity to try Golden Crown, as well. We each got the rib/chicken combo with slaw & tater wedges. Cost for each meal was $9.99, a bit high, I thot, but the food is of good quality. GC is following Laci’s trend with a cardboard carrier for their meals, which I think is a nice change from bags elsewhere. We enjoyed the food provided…a nice tangy/citrusy sauce on the ribs. They only negative was the wedges quickly become soggy when packed with the other items. Gotta give them a “B” grade overall. We’ll go back!

Thank you for the review and recommendation. We live within walking distance of the Golden Crown too and decided to try based on your article. We thought the chicken was very juicy and tasty with a nice spice. We loved the potato wedges and even the cole slaw was good. Give it a try!
